Carl "Okie" Nelson 1918-2008 Funeral service for Carl O.(Okie)Nelson, age 89 of Princeton, will be Thursday, Mar 20, 2008 at 11:00 AM at the Evangelical Covenant Church. Pastor Chuck Wahlstrom and Pastor John Weborg will officiate. Burial will follow in the Elm Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Mar 19, 2008 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Norberg Memorial Home. Carl passed away on Sunday, Mar 16, 2008 at Heartland Health Care Center. He was born on Sep 11, 1918 in Chicago,Il. to Carl G. Nelson and Elsie(Adamson)Nelson . He grew up at the Covenant Childrens Home,Princeton from 1927-1936. Okie graduated from Princeton High School in 1939 and joined the Army in 1940 and served in the Aleution Islands during World War II, being discharged in 1945. He married Signe Peterson August 1, 1945 in Princeton. He was self employed running Nelson's Sheet Metal & Roofing Company from 1954-1967. Okie the joined Acme Manufacturing Company as a salesman Retiring in 1988. He was an active member of Evangelical Covenant Church and served on its Board of Trustees. Okie belonged to VFW #4323, American Legion #125 where he served as post Commander. Okie enjoyed being a Boy Scout Leader for 15 years,playing Santa Claus for the city of Princeton for over 20 years, being a member of the chain gang for Princeton High School Football for 50 years. He was a volunteer fireman for the City of Princeton for 25 years. He also enjoyed woodworking,coin collecting and gardening. He is survived by his wife Signe,2 children,Gary(Carol)Nelson of Peoria and Sharon(Norman)Johnson of Glenview Il, with 4 grandchildren,Brian(Stephanie)Johnson of Northfield Il.,David(Courtney-fiancee)Johnson of Wildwood Il.,Matthew Nelson of Peoria Il. and Sarah(James)Shields of Chicago and 2 great-grandchildren,Brett and Brad Johnson (Northfield)and nieces and nephews. Also surviving are 3 foster siblings,Kenneth Shipp ,Geraldine Neuhalfen and Ray Shipp all of Princeton. He was preceded by his parents,1 sister Helen Morris,2 brothers Arthur Nelson and Raymond Nelson as well as Infant Baby granddaughter Johnson and foster siblings and foster parents. Memorials may be directed to the Covenant Children's Home and Family Services-Memory Garden. Also to the Evangelical Covenant Church. please rerun I forgot his employment thanks Rita and Lyle J.D.
