Iris C. Beaver 1916-2013 Funeral service for Iris C. Beaver, age 96 of Mattoon, will be Friday, Apr 05, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the St. Matthews Lutheran Church. Rev. Alfred Beck will officiate. Burial will follow in the Elm Lawn Memorial Park on Apr 05, 2013. The family will receive friends on Friday, Apr 05, 2013 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the St. Matthews Lutheran Church. Iris C. Beaver passed away on Sunday, Mar 31, 2013 at Odd Fellow Rebekah Nursing Home, in Mattoon. She was born August 17, 1916 in Westville, SC the daughter of the Rev. C.P. Chewning and Ruth Sessions Chewning. She married Rev. Ervin T. Beaver on May 24, 1938 in Mulllins, SC. He preceded her in death in 1982. She was a graduate of Columbia College, Columbia, SC in 1937 and graduate studies at Appalachian State Teacher College, The University of Missouri, and Northern Illinois University. She taught in the Princeton Elementary Schools from 1953-1983. She was an active member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church for 50 years having taught Sunday School for many years, served as president of the Women’s Guild, Chairman of the Stewardship Committee, and President of the Church Council. She also was an active member of Prairie View Health Care Auxiliary, Church Women United, and Retired Teachers Association. After moving to Brookstone Estates in Mattoon in August of 2003 she was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Friends of the Library, Quadrangle Book Club, and the Women’s Auxiliary of the Salvation Army. She is survived by one son, David (Kathy) of Mattoon, IL one daughter in-law, Carol, of Keene, NH, 4 granddaughters, Michelle (Pema) Wangdak of Tobyhanna, PA, Cassandra (John) McMillan of Humboldt, IL, Amy (Jeff) Swearingen of Mattoon, IL, Emily (Kevin) Hilligoss of Lovington, IL. Eight great grandchildren, Rowen and Tessa Wangdak of Tobyhanna, PA, Dawson McMillan of Humboldt, IL, Raegan, Reese and Rebecca Swearingen of Mattoon, IL, Wyatt and Will Hilligoss of Lovington, IL. One brother, The Rev. J. Boyd Chewning and one sister, Mary Lowder both of SC. She was preceded in death by one son, Michael in 1972, her parents, three brothers and one sister. Memorials may be directed to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church or the donor's choice.
