Princeton - Jeanne Barbara Johnson, 103, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of August 26, 2026, at Liberty Village in Princeton, Illinois. Jeanne was born May 17, 1923, in Dixon, Illinois, the beloved daughter of Charles Sr. and Helen (Martenson) Smith. She grew up on the family farm, where hard work, determination, and a deep devotion to family became an important part of the woman she would become. She began her education in a one-room schoolhouse just down the road from her home before attending Dixon High School. During her high school years, she helped her older brother, Charles Jr., affectionately known as "Buddy," with his coursework and classes due to his hearing impairment, all while working full-time on the family farm. Through this experience, Jeanne excelled in a wide variety of subjects, including coursework that, at the time, was generally reserved for male students. Her intelligence, determination, and willingness to challenge the expectations of her generation were qualities she carried throughout her life. Jeanne went on to attend the University of Illinois, graduating in 1945 as American troops were returning home from World War II. Following her undergraduate studies, she moved to Manhattan, Kansas, where she worked while also pursuing graduate-level classes at Kansas State University. Bright, talented, and independent, Jeanne was truly a woman ahead of her time. Yet through all of her accomplishments, family remained her greatest passion and highest priority. She would eventually met Gail Johnson, and a loving relationship blossomed. The two were married in Nachusa, Illinois, in 1948. Together, they built a life centered around family and raised four children: Barbara Ann, Pamela Susan, Steven Gail, and Mark Charles. Jeanne treasured being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was especially blessed to share a close relationship with her grandchildren, Matthew and Stephanie Sterling, who grew up near Princeton. Her daughter Pamela also held a particularly important role in Jeanne's later years, providing loving care, companionship, and support. Throughout her life, Jeanne found great pleasure and peaceful moments in watching birds and wildlife. Outside the picture window of her living room, she maintained a lovely patio filled with bird feeders, animal feeders, and watering stations, creating the perfect place to enjoy the nature she loved. Jeanne also remained deeply connected to her roots. In partnership with her sons, she continued overseeing the family farm in Dixon following the deaths of her parents and brother, preserving a connection to the land and family history that had shaped so much of her life. Even at 103 years old, Jeanne maintained her remarkably sharp mind, caring heart, and wonderful sense of humor. Her memory for people, dates, circumstances, and the countless details of a life spanning more than a century remained extraordinary. Those fortunate enough to know Jeanne will remember not simply the number of years she lived, but the way she lived them-with intelligence, strength, humor, curiosity, devotion, and love. She was truly an amazing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, and the legacy she created through her family will continue for generations. Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Sr. and Helen Smith; her brother, Charles Jr. "Buddy" Smith, in September 2001; her beloved husband, Gail Johnson, in September 2002; and her son, Steven Johnson, in December 2003. She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Scott) Larson and Pamela Sterling; her son, Mark (Mindey) Johnson; her grandchildren, Jared Larson, Courtney Smith Toller, Matthew Sterling, Stephanie Sterling, Haley Johnson Rosenberg, Lindsey Johnson, and Cory Johnson; and her great-grandchildren, Erik Larson, Elijah Larson, Ethan Larson, Brigham Toller, Blakely Jeanne Toller, and Scarlett Rosenberg. Private services honoring Jeanne's remarkable life will be held at a future date with her extended family on the family farm in Dixon, Illinois-a fitting place to remember a woman whose life remained so deeply connected to her family and her roots.
