Jewel Marie Sutherland

Princeton - Jewel Marie (Ainley) Sutherland passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 25, 2023 at Aperion Care in Princeton, IL., surrounded by her loving family. Jewel was born August 5, 1930 in Kewanee, Il to the late Albert and Hazel Eleanor Dorothy (Greenway) Ainley. She was the fourth of eight children. She finished out her sophomore year in Kewanee. She was a hard worker her whole life and very protective of her family. She spent her time helping her parents by making meals for her family while they worked and taking care of her younger siblings. She worked at the Dime Store in Kewanee where her grandmother would come in and embarrass her with her "sailor mouth". She had some funny stories to share about her. She also worked at the bowling alley as a pin setter before automatic pin setters were invented. Jewel met Omar Smith at the age of 17 and fell in love and they married. She gained two stepdaughters Janet and Jean and they lived with Omar's parents, before settling in the Wyanet area where they farmed together. She was the typical farmers wife from milking to driving the tractor, they were a team. Together they had six children; Bonnie, Anita, Gail, Pam, Lisa and Tom. They also raised two of Omar's grandsons, Chuck and Steve Zebell while their father was in the service. They joined our family at the age of two and three. While in high school their father returning home from the service, the boys, Chuck and Steve moved in with their father. To this day they stilled called Jewel Mom. She cared for her father-in-law Alvin Smith and her father, Albert Ainley as they got older and could no longer care for themselves. Jewel babysat the neighborhood children to earn extra money for the family. She worked at Prairie View as a very caring CNA until she was hired at Harper Wyman, eventually retiring from Morris Foundation at the age of 70. Jewel and Omar were married for over twenty-five years before ending in divorce. She remarried, the love of her life James Sutherland, gaining four stepsons; Wayne, Kenny, Gregg and Mike. She was happy for many years until James passed. Jewel enjoyed sewing and crocheting. She liked reading and collected Indian made collectibles. She was an Elvis fan her entire life and was a big fan of Jonathan Lyons, the Elvis Impersonator. She enjoyed puzzles and spending time with loved ones. Jewel was the most loving, caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. She was the bravest woman we ever knew. Heaven has gained a wonderful angel, who will be deeply missed by those on earth. Surviving by her six children, Bonnie Shofner (Ron Barth) of Wyanet, IL., Anita Wilson of Henry, IL., Gail (Armondo) Heredia of Chillicothe, IL., Pam Sutherland of Princeton, IL., Lisa Nelsen of Buda, IL., Thomas (Jill) Smith of Wyanet, IL.; 17 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; several step children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Hazel Ainley, husband James Sutherland, her siblings, Al Ainley, John Ainley, Dick Ainley, Jerry Ainley, Beverly Marbut, Karleen Ferguson and Faith Schwingen, and grandson, Joseph Wilson A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2023 at Norberg Memorial Home, Inc. and Monuments from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Services will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2023 at Norberg Memorial Home, Inc. and Monuments at 10:30 a.m. officiated by Pastor Ryan Sutton.
